Cycling the Colle dell'Agnello

The “Pass of the Lamb” is a legendary climb whose name belies its true nature—far from docile, it reaches 2,744 meters above sea level, making it the highest paved cross-border mountain pass in Europe.

Straddling the French-Italian border, the Colle dell’Agnello's length and steep gradients will challenge even the most seasoned cyclists. It ranks among the elite climbs of cycling, alongside icons like the Stelvio, Izoard, Mortirolo, and Pordoi Pass.

Frequently featured in both the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France, it’s a must-ride for cycling enthusiasts. As you ascend, the western face of Monviso gradually comes into view, framed by a panorama that expands to reveal towering peaks near and far.

Reaching the small plateau at the summit offers a profound sense of accomplishment. Few places on Earth bring you so close to the sky.

Riding Colle dell'Agnello | Piedmont

- From Casteldelfino -

If you’re starting this epic ride from Saluzzo, a historic town nestled at the foothills of the Alps, you’ll kick off with either a short warm-up climb on the Colletta di Brondello or a smooth roll through Piasco, both of which lead into the breathtaking Val Varaita. This stunning valley is framed by increasingly rugged, dramatic peaks.

While the climb officially begins in the small mountain village of Casteldelfino, the first 30 km along the Varaita Valley are far from flat and should be considered part of the overall challenge.

As you continue, the route passes the charming village of Chianale before tackling the steepest section of the ascent: the final 9 km, where the gradient consistently hits double digits.

"Ride as much or as little, or as long or as short as you feel. But ride."

Eddy Merckx
